Why We Endorse Harrison Clark

Harrison Clark is a candidate who will listen first, act responsibly, and represent his ward, not just an ideology. He’s focused on transparent communication and getting a fair share of investment for historic Ward 9, including his plan for an inner city recreation hub. Residents deserve leadership rooted in honesty, hard work, and community engagement. After over a year of campaigning across Ward 9, Harrison is ready to bring residents’ voices to city council.

About Harrison Clark

Harrison Clark may be new to politics, but he has put in the work to get to know the needs of other residents in his community and be their voice. Born and raised in Calgary, Harrison is a small business owner who values authenticity and quality. He believes in a basic principle: value for money. Harrison wants to make sure Calgarians get fair value from the taxes and rising costs they’re shouldering. That means ensuring every dollar spent works harder for the people who pay it.

I am an independent candidate because I believe in the power of compromise and collaborative leadership.

The collective needs, wants, and hopes of the residents of Ward 9 are not ideological. They are the aspirations for a better quality of life. Many if not all of the decisions we make at council can achieve this goal without the overt pressures of ideology.

I am running to represent the unique communities of Ward 9 because I see that we are at an important crossroads of change and renewal. And I believe I am the person to guide these communities through, in a way that helps to cement the historic nature of what are Calgary’s oldest communities – while embracing our growth and renewal with strategic investments that will help us welcome new neighbours and meet our growing needs.

On housing affordability:

The City of Calgary is one of the largest land-owning municipalities in the country. As councillor for Ward 9 I will review every reasonable opportunity to utilize public land within to provide affordable housing. We have incredible community partners that specialize in developing affordable housing that are at work in Ward 9 right now. Let’s make sure we provide them every opportunity we can to expand this important work. In my policy document I have also suggested that we review opportunities in our legacy industrial lands for reclamation to increase the number of viable acres available in central Ward 9 for housing.

On public transit:

We must acknowledge that with our continued growth, alternative forms of transportation will become more and more important. We must properly invest in our transit system and pathway systems to meet the demands of today and tomorrow. This has long term cost benefits for the city that must be taken seriously.

The Green Line project is a city and province defining endeavour. If we are able to accomplish this work, we will show the world that we are ready and able to meet the demands of the 21st century. Communication has broken down a number of times through this process. The residents of Ward 9 can count on me to be a balanced and active partner with the Provincial and Federal governments.

On climate planning:

The way in which any urban centre engages with its natural geography has an impact on its citizens quality of life – with the potential to either positively or negatively impact the quality of life of future generations.

One of the clear paths forward I have found in discussions with residents across Ward 9 is our tree canopy. Aging trees and re-development have had a major impact in Ward 9 and “hot zones” are developing in a number of our communities. Urban forests, rain gardens and an increase to the number of trees we plant annually will boost the quality of life in Ward 9 in the years ahead

On public services:

A successful city provides the opportunity for any citizen to access its services from wherever they may be in life. I believe in many ways the City of Calgary has been successful at this. I believe it is important to acknowledge that as our city grows, we need to clarify, confirm and diversify the way in which we make access to public services available.
