Tell City Council: Fund Calgary’s Low-Income Transit Pass
As the cost of living continues to skyrocket, many of our neighbours are forced into impossible choices, such as whether to pay for gas or food. Calgary’s Low-Income Transit Pass provides critical relief for people whose resources are stretched.
But on July 31st 2024, Calgary City Council voted down a motion to increase funding that would keep the Low-Income Transit Program viable for the growing population it serves.
It’s up to us to tell City Council how damaging and short sighted this is.
Due to inflation and increased demand, the annual cost of the Low Income Transit Pass Program has increased by $19 million since 2019. While Calgary Transit has one-time funding in place to cover the shortfall in 2024 and 2025, Council says there is no room in the City budget to ensure the program can meet the growing demand in 2026 and beyond.
The result?
Many people who depend on Low-Income Transit Passes will be rejected when they apply, and our city will become more expensive and less accessible for thousands of low-income Calgarians. Without the mobility that a transit pass provides, people will face even greater barriers to fulfil their responsibilities and live their lives.
Together, let’s get Calgary City Council to reconsider their vote before budget discussions take place this November. If hundreds of concerned voters sign this petition, we can get our elected officials to keep Calgary accessible and commit to funding the Low-Income Transit Pass.
