Keep Calgary free from party politics

In multiple public surveys, Albertans made it clear they didn’t want political parties in municipal elections. But the provincial government doesn’t seem to care – and passed legislation to introduce municipal political parties anyway. It’s critical for us to clearly state our opposition.

Cities function best when councils can have open dialogues, engage with community members, and be flexible and creative with problem solving. Introducing political parties to municipal politics in Calgary will exclude important perspectives from City Council that do not fit party ideologies. That would be really bad!

It’s critical that community members see their elected representatives as open conduits for conversation rather than partisan supporters parroting party lines. Party allegiances will create massive barriers for municipal politics because many community members will feel disconnected from their Councillors due to partisan differences.

That’s why it’s so important for us to fight back and demand that the provincial government repeal their municipal political party legislation. If thousands of voting citizens sign this petition, we can get the provincial government to keep Calgary free from party politics.
